WordPress to Shopify Migration + CRO Optimization Case Study: Mirtouch.com (Technical Breakdown)

WordPress to Shopify Migration + CRO Optimization Case Study: Mirtouch.com (Technical Breakdown)

If you’re running a WordPress/WooCommerce store and feel limited by performance, maintainability, or conversion rate—migrating to Shopify can be a smart move only if it’s done correctly.

In this case study, I’m sharing how we migrated Mirtouch.com from WordPress to Shopify and rebuilt key pages with a CRO-first approach—without sacrificing SEO structure, user experience, or operational stability.

This article is written for founders, marketers, and store owners who want a technical, step-by-step view of what a successful migration and redesign looks like.

Why Mirtouch Moved from WordPress to Shopify

WordPress is flexible, but as a store grows, many teams face common issues:
• Frequent plugin conflicts and maintenance overhead
• Performance instability (especially with multiple marketing plugins)
• Checkout and UX limitations
• Higher risk of theme-level inconsistencies over time
• Harder to standardize product page experiences across SKUs

Shopify simplifies ongoing maintenance and makes it easier to scale, but the migration has to be handled carefully to avoid:
• Ranking drops
• Broken URLs and lost backlinks
• Duplicate content
• Tracking issues (GA4/Meta)
• Conversion drop due to UX changes

Project Scope (What We Delivered)

For Mirtouch.com, the scope included:

1) Full Platform Migration (WordPress → Shopify)
• Product + variant structure mapping
• Collections architecture
• Customer-friendly URL planning
• SEO-safe redirects
• Content migration and cleanup

2) CRO-Focused Theme Build and Page Redesign
• Homepage layout improvement for clarity + trust
• Product page redesign for higher conversion
• Offer visibility + quantity/bundle style presentation
• Improved mobile layout and purchase flow

3) Performance + Stability Improvements
• Lightweight theme sections
• App minimization strategy
• Optimized image handling and asset loading

Step-by-Step: How We Migrated WordPress to Shopify (Technical)

Step 1: Pre-Migration Audit (SEO + Data + UX)

Before touching data, we documented:
• Existing URL structure (products, categories, blog, info pages)
• Top landing pages by traffic
• Top ranking pages/keywords (from Search Console / SEO tools)
• Current conversion path (homepage → collection → PDP → cart → checkout)
• Plugin list and what features they were actually providing (often many are redundant)

This “inventory” prevents losing critical pages and functionality during migration.

Step 2: Shopify Architecture Planning (Collections, Tags, Product Types)

A smooth Shopify build starts with a clean catalog model:
• Product Types for high-level grouping
• Tags for filtering and internal logic
• Collections for navigation and merchandising

We planned:
• Main navigation based on buying intent
• Collection naming consistency for SEO + clarity
• Variant naming standardization (important for PDP readability and inventory)

Step 3: Product & Media Migration (With Data Validation)

We migrated:
• Product titles, descriptions, pricing, SKUs
• Variant structure
• Images and media ordering
• Metafields (where needed for structured product attributes)

Validation checklist we used:
• Variants match (count + pricing + SKUs)
• Image order matches best-selling presentation
• No missing product descriptions or formatting break
• Proper handle formatting and URL hygiene

Step 4: SEO Preservation (Critical Part)

This is where most migrations fail.

A) URL mapping + 301 redirect plan
We created a redirect map from WordPress URLs to Shopify URLs, including:
• Product URLs
• Category/collection URLs
• Blog URLs (if applicable)
• Policy pages and other indexed pages

Best practice: avoid redirect chains (A → B → C). Always redirect old URL directly to final destination.

B) Metadata and on-page SEO consistency
We ensured:
• Title tags and meta descriptions were recreated where required
• H1 rules were maintained
• Canonicals behaved correctly (Shopify defaults are usually fine, but must be verified)

C) Image SEO (alt text + naming)
We standardized image alt text formatting for consistency and accessibility, using a structured naming convention (example):
• Product Name + Variant + Use Case

This also supports image search visibility and accessibility compliance.

Step 5: Theme Development (CRO-First, Lightweight)

We rebuilt the Shopify front-end with performance and conversion in mind.

Key technical choices:
• Fewer heavy apps (apps = extra scripts = slower pages)
• Modular sections (easy to iterate without code edits)
• Mobile-first spacing + typography rules
• Clean Liquid logic to avoid bloated templates

CRO Improvements We Implemented (What Changed and Why)

1) Product Page Redesign (PDP Optimization)

The product page is where revenue happens—so the layout must do three jobs fast:
1. Explain what it is
2. Build trust
3. Make buying easy

For Mirtouch PDPs, we focused on:

✅ Above-the-fold clarity
• Clean title + review summary + pricing
• Visible discount messaging without clutter
• Key benefits in short bullet form (scannable)

✅ Offer structure (quantity tiers / bundle logic)
We optimized how the quantity options appear so buyers instantly understand:
• best value
• most popular option
• savings per tier

✅ Trust elements
• Ratings + review count near title
• Safety/use-case reassurance placed near decision area
• Clear delivery/ETA placement

✅ CTA hierarchy
• Primary CTA clearly stands out
• Secondary purchase option displayed without distraction
• Reduced friction by minimizing competing buttons and visual noise

2) Homepage Redesign

Homepage is often a “brand poster,” but CRO-first homepages act like a funnel:
• Clear statement of who it’s for
• Top products/categories immediately accessible
• Social proof near the first CTA
• Clean navigation and minimal distractions

Performance Optimization (What We Focused On)

Shopify is fast by default—until themes/apps ruin it.

Our approach:
• Reduce unnecessary app scripts
• Compress and properly size images
• Ensure clean section rendering (avoid heavy loops)
• Avoid loading non-critical assets above the fold

Practical improvements include:
• Lazy loading where appropriate
• Fewer third-party pixels firing on every page
• Cleaner CSS/JS structure (no duplicated libraries)

Post-Launch QA (What We Tested)

Before and after launch, we ran a structured QA:

Functional testing
• Add to cart, quantity logic, variants
• Checkout flow
• Mobile behavior
• Email flows (order confirmation, shipping updates)
• Search + filtering behavior

SEO testing
• Redirects tested at scale
• Indexable page checks
• Canonical and sitemap validation

Tracking checks
• GA4 purchase events
• Meta Pixel purchase/add-to-cart checks
• No double firing events

Common WordPress → Shopify Migration Mistakes (Avoid These)

If you’re considering migration, avoid these traps:
• ❌ Launching without full redirect mapping
• ❌ Rebuilding pages but changing URL structure randomly
• ❌ Copy-pasting content without formatting and hierarchy cleanup
• ❌ Overloading Shopify with apps (slow, messy, expensive)
• ❌ Forgetting analytics and conversion tracking verification

Who This Migration Approach Is Best For

This process works best for brands that:
• Want a stable and scalable store
• Care about SEO preservation
• Want to improve conversion rate (not just redesign visuals)
• Need cleaner code and easier iteration for future campaigns
