How to Bulk Add HS Codes to Shopify Products (3 Methods Compared)
There are three ways to bulk add HS codes to Shopify products: Shopify’s built-in bulk editor, an inventory CSV import, or a bulk-editing app. The built-in editor works for small batches, the CSV route works if you live in spreadsheets, and an app is the fastest option for a full catalog.
Since the US ended its de minimis exemption in August 2025 — and with the EU’s €150 exemption ending July 1, 2026 — Shopify advises merchants shipping internationally to add HS codes and country of origin to all their products. If your catalog has hundreds or thousands of products, doing that one product at a time isn’t realistic. Here’s each method, honestly, with its real limits.
This is general information, not legal or customs advice.
What is an HS code, and why does every product need one?
An HS code is a standardized international trade code, usually six digits, that tells customs authorities what a product is. Shopify uses it (together with country of origin) to calculate duties and import taxes; customs authorities use it to clear — or hold — your parcels.
Per the Shopify Help Center, HS codes are required for international orders. If a product is missing its HS code, Shopify estimates duties from the product description and category instead; if those are missing too, no duties are calculated at all — even with duty collection switched on at checkout. That’s how customers end up with surprise charges at the door.
Method 1: Shopify’s built-in bulk editor
Best for: small batches where products share the same code, or quick one-off fixes.
Shopify’s admin has a native bulk editor that can edit the HS code field across selected products:
- In your Shopify admin, go to Products.
- Check the products you want to edit.
- Click Bulk edit.
- Click Columns, and under Shipping, add Harmonized System code (add Country of origin too while you’re there).
- Fill in the values and click Save.
Where it falls short
- Selection is manual. You’re ticking checkboxes page by page; filtering is limited.
- The grid is hand-entry. Easy to fat-finger, no validation, no history of what changed.
- It doesn’t scale. Shopify’s own docs frame this method as suitable when you “don’t have many products to update.” For 50 products it’s fine. For 2,000 it’s an afternoon of clicking.
Method 2: Inventory CSV export/import
Best for: merchants comfortable with spreadsheets who want to update everything in one pass — and who have time for the round-trip.
Here’s a gotcha many merchants hit first: the standard product CSV doesn’t carry HS codes. The HS Code and COO (country of origin) columns live in Shopify’s inventory CSV. The workflow:
- Go to Products > Inventory in your Shopify admin.
- Click Export and export your inventory CSV (choose All states for safety validation).
- Open the file in a spreadsheet program. Find the HS Code and COO columns.
- Fill in HS codes per variant, and country of origin as two-letter ISO codes (e.g., CN, IN, US).
- Leave the On hand (new) column empty so you don’t accidentally change stock levels.
- Go back to Products > Inventory, click Import, upload the file, and start the import.
Where it falls short
- It’s a multi-step round-trip. Export, edit, re-import, check the error email, fix failed rows, re-import again. Budget an hour minimum.
- Inventory risk. The same file controls stock quantities — one stray value in the wrong column and you’ve overwritten inventory. Shopify’s validation catches some of this, not all.
- No filtering logic. One code for “Silver Jewelry” and another for “Leather Bags”? You’re building that yourself with spreadsheet filters.
- It goes stale. Add new products next month, and you’re doing the whole round-trip again.
Method 3: A bulk-editing app (the fast path for full catalogs)
Best for: full catalogs, collection-by-collection classification, and staying compliant as your catalog grows.
This is the job HS Code & Origin Bulk Editor was built for. Instead of round-tripping a CSV or checkbox-clicking through the bulk editor, you work directly in the Shopify admin:
- Filter your catalog by collection, vendor, or product type.
- Enter the HS code and country of origin for that group.
- Apply — done in a few clicks, across however many products matched.
This maps to how classification actually works: products in the same collection usually share a code. All your candles are one code; all your cotton T-shirts another. Filter, apply, next collection.

Paid tiers add advanced filtering, update history (so you can see what changed and when), scheduled automatic updates, custom HS-code/origin rules, batch updates across multiple collections, and higher volumes — useful once compliance becomes an ongoing process rather than a one-time fix.
The honest trade-off: it’s an app install, and the biggest catalogs need a paid tier. If you have 30 products, you don’t need it. If you have 3,000, it turns a day of CSV wrangling into minutes.
How do the three methods compare?
| Built-in bulk editor | Inventory CSV | HS Code & Origin Bulk Editor | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Small batches | Spreadsheet-comfortable merchants | Full catalogs |
| Filter by collection/vendor/type | Limited | Manual, in your spreadsheet | Yes, built in |
| CSV round-trip needed | No | Yes (export → edit → import) | No |
| Risk of touching inventory data | No | Yes — same file controls stock | No |
| Time for ~1,000 products | Hours of clicking | ~1 hour+ incl. fixes | Minutes |
| Repeatable as catalog grows | Manual each time | Manual each time | Rules & scheduled updates (paid) |
| Cost | Free | Free | Free tier; paid for volume/automation |
Which method should you choose?
Under ~50 products: the built-in bulk editor. Free, and the clicking is tolerable.
A few hundred products, one-time cleanup, spreadsheet-handy: the inventory CSV works — leave the stock columns alone and expect a validation round or two.
Hundreds to thousands of products, or a growing catalog: doing this by hand or by CSV takes hours and has to be redone every time you add products. HS Code & Origin Bulk Editor does it by collection in a few clicks, directly in the admin, no export-import cycle — and can keep doing it automatically as your catalog changes.
FAQ
Can I bulk add HS codes in Shopify without an app?
Yes, two ways: Shopify’s built-in bulk editor (select products → Bulk edit → add the Harmonized System code column) or the inventory CSV export/import, which includes HS Code and COO columns. Both work; both require manual selection or spreadsheet work, which gets slow on large catalogs.
Does Shopify’s product CSV include HS codes?
No. The standard product CSV doesn’t carry HS codes or country of origin. Those fields live in the inventory CSV (Products > Inventory > Export). This catches out many merchants who export their product CSV expecting to find an HS code column.
Where do I find the right HS code for my products?
Search the harmonized tariff schedule for your destination country — for the US, the official lookup is hts.usitc.gov. Shopify’s product page also suggests codes when you type a product description. Products in the same category usually share a code, which is why applying codes by collection is efficient.
Do HS codes go on the product or the variant in Shopify?
HS codes and country of origin are set per variant. Most variants of a product share one code, but variants that differ materially (a leather vs. canvas bag) can carry different codes.
How fast can I add HS codes to my whole Shopify catalog?
With a bulk-editing app, a full catalog can be classified in minutes: filter by collection, vendor, or product type, then apply a code to the whole group at once. HS Code & Origin Bulk Editor does this directly in the Shopify admin with no CSV export-import cycle. Manual and CSV methods typically take hours for catalogs over a few hundred products.
What happens if my products have no HS codes?
Shopify estimates duties from the product description and category instead; if those are missing too, no duties are calculated at checkout even when duty collection is enabled. At the border, missing or wrong codes can mean held parcels, recalculated charges, or refused entry.
This is general information, not legal or customs advice. Customs rules change — verify current requirements with official sources or a licensed customs broker.
